The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has opened up on the reason behind the decision of the party to shift its scheduled House of Assembly and House of Representatives primaries indefinitely, hinging its decision on the unreconciled delegates list.

The opposition party which spoke through the Director-General, New Media, Collins Opurozor on Monday while fielding questions from DAILY POST at the party secretariat in Owerri, pointed out that Imo PDP would not vote along with other states who were now voting with their three-man and one man national delegates.

PDP said, ” We are taking our time to ensure that everything we do is substantially in compliance with the constitution of the country, the electoral act and our party constitution.

” Primary election is a process that begins From congresses across various wards. These congresses are supposed to produce the 3man ad-hoc delegates, otherwise known as the electoral college. The college of electors will eventually elect the candidates of the party.

“Imo PDP has commenced that process and it’s still inconclusive. So as soon as we conclude our congresses to produce our 3-man ad-hoc delegates, we shall proceed to nominate and elect our candidates.

“Most times in politics there are various interests and the party wants to put into cognisance all interests and ensure everybody is carried along.

The party said, even though no date has been announced for the commencement of the primaries, it is not a crisis situation.

PDP further said,” you know Imo today is an APC state and they control the instrumentality of power and media apparatuses. What they are doing is to whip up sentiments and create flames of crises where there is none and try to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The party said, “Imo PDP is a united family, we are law-abiding people that is why we are taking our time to ensure that everything we do is substantially in compliance with the constitution of the country, the electoral act and our party constitution.

“We should expect the date as soon as the entire processes are completed. Also, remember that the party still has between now and June.

When queried on plans put in place by the party to ensure the delegates’ safety, PDP said most of the primary elections will not hold in their various locations because APC in Imo has failed to provide security which is the basic obligation of every government. In view of that, people from Ideato-North LGA, and Okigwe LGA among others will come to Owerri to do their primaries.
