Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Aniekan Bassey, immediate past National Legal Adviser of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Emmanuel Enoidem as well as the former Commissioner for Economic Development, Dr. Ekong Sampson have emerged as the Senatorial Flagbearers for PDP in the state.

The trio will fly the flag for the three Senatorial seats in the 2023 general elections.

The Speaker, Bassey, polled a total score of 272 to clinch the ticket as a candidate for the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District (Uyo) after two opponents withdrew from the party primaries.

The former National Legal Adviser of PDP, Barrister Emmanuel Enoidem polled a total of 329 out of 334 accredited delegates to win the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District,

While the former Commissioner for Economic Development Dr Ekong Sampson polled a total of 368 votes to win the PDP ticket for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District after the member representing Eket Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives Hon Patrick Ifon scored 1 vote.

Francis Uduyok representing Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo Federal Constituency also scored 11 votes.

DAILY POST reported that Akparawa Ephraim Inyangeyen did not participate in the exercise conducted at the Special Protection Unit of Nigeria Police Force Base 27 in the Onna council area of the state citing subsisting court order as his reason.

However, Mr. Ayo Odugbesan, PDP National Officer, the PDP state Chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan and the Governor, Udom Emmanuel in their separate remarks described the contest as hitch-free.

The PDP chairman said, “the party has not contradicted any law by conducting the exercise” even as he urged aggrieved members not to overheat the polity with protest.

Also the National Officer, Odugbesan appealed for calm, noting that “protest in any game is normal”.

Governor Emmanuel, who commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise across the 26 state constituencies, 10 Federal Constituencies and three Senatorial Districts, underscored the importance of internal unity and cohesion in the party ahead of the general elections.

He stressed the need for the aggrieved aspirants to consider toeing the line of peace as he would soon extend the hands of fellowship for reconciliation and rebuilding of the party.
